4 Dental Tips for Pregnant Women
Pregnancy is a wonderful and busy time for a woman, but even with all the excitement that comes with pregnancy, pregnant women should be sure to take care of their dental health for themselves and their babies.
Happily, while some treatments and medicines should be avoided in the first trimester, most routine treatment is perfectly safe through the course of a pregnancy.
To be sure your dental care is appropriate, let your dentist knows you are pregnant.
Here are 4 important pieces of strategy from Bondi Dental
-
- Pay attention to your teeth and gums, even if they are currently healthy. Gum disease can cause premature delivery or low birth weight. Maintaining healthy gums can stop the transfer of decay-causing bacteria from you to your baby and prevent early childhood tooth decay.
- Avoid or treat vomiting, and acid reflux caused by morning sickness. Some women experience morning sickness with vomiting and/or acid reflux. Vomiting and acid reflux increase the risk of tooth erosion.
There are simple ways to reduce this risk. Rinse your mouth with a mouth rinse or even water, chew sugar free gum, or smear a dab of toothpaste on your teeth. Then wait 30 minutes before brushing if you have vomited.
-
- Pregnant women can develop gum disease due to hormonal changes. Seek treatment of affected gums to avoid this.
Signs of gum disease include bad breath, red gums (instead of pink), swollen gums, and bleeding gums.
- Stop smoking! In fact, you should quit all tobacco products, if you are pregnant or not! However, smoking while pregnant is particularly not good for you or your unborn baby, and can lead to gum disease.
