Here’s a 1 minutes and 14 seconds 8 Bad Toothbrushing Habits video. See full transcript below.

Brushing of teeth is one of the habits considered good for your dental health. However, not brushing your teeth the right way will make this habit useless. Your Bondi dentist shares to you the 8 bad tooth brushing habits so that you won’t be doing the same thing:

1. Some people don’t brush their teeth long or often enough

When you brush your teeth, it should last at least 2 minutes. This will give you ample time to brush all of the sides of your teeth. Brushing should always be at least twice a day.

2. Brushing the teeth too hard.

Brushing your teeth too hard can irritate or hurt your gums. Irritated gums will recede resulting to the exposure of the roots of the teeth. When this happens, your teeth will be very sensitive when exposed to too much hot or too much cold. It can also erode your teeth’s enamel.

3. Using a more than 3-month old toothbrush

For a more effective tooth brushing, make sure that your toothbrush is not more than three months old. If you notice your toothbrush look fray, you can also change it even before 3 months are over. There are a lot of toothbrushes sold in the market today that have color indicators in their bristles.

4. Incorrect brushing routine

Horizontal strokes cause abrasions. Proper brushing should be a soft or gentle up and down motion. You can also try circular motion but not horizontal strokes along the gum line.

5. Begins tooth brushing on the same spot each time

To avoid getting lazy, start on a different place on your mouth each time whenever you brush.

6. Not rinsing their toothbrush after using

Bacteria will build up on your brush if you don’t rinse it after using. There’s a great chance you will end up putting these bacteria into your mouth the next time you will use your tooth brush again.

7. Not brushing on the inner surfaces of the teeth

Most people skip brushing the inner surface of their teeth (this is the side where you press your tongue against). Cleaning this part is as important as cleaning the other sides. Bacteria can build up anywhere in your teeth, so it’s important to make sure that all sides of your teeth (including the in between sides) are thoroughly cleaned.

8. Some people don’t dry their toothbrushes after using

Moist attracts bacteria. Leaving moist in your toothbrush is like giving bacteria a breeding ground.

Doing the bad habits mentioned above will make you susceptible to cavities, gum disease and tooth decay. Now that you are aware of what you could be doing wrong when you brush, break the bad habits and start brushing your teeth right. Turn your good dental habits into something even better.
